Thanksgiving!!!

Hi all!

As we all know, Thanksgiving is in a few days! And while many of us celebrate with our friends and families, please keep in mind that TASK is serving a full fledged Thanksgiving meal for it's patrons who have no other way to celebrate this holiday.

So on this day as we give thanks for all that we care for, save a little piece for TASK and the volunteers who make the event possible for the patrons.

So thank you volunteers, and thank you donators who provided the food for TASK's Thanksgiving festivities. It means a lot to those at TASK and the patrons.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Performing Arts Outreach: The Share Project!!!

Hey guys!

Every Thursday at TASK from 11:30 to 1:00 participants get to write poems, songs, short stories, and plays and then share what they had created to receive feedback and constructive criticism. Sometimes, TASK uses these meetings to invite professionals in the preforming arts fields to volunteer an hour to run a workshop.

A band has also been formed! Called "The FunkTASKtiks" the band practices on Mondays from 11:00 to 1:00 and is open to anyone who wants to be a musician, no matter the skill level! Also, the program takes trips to see local theatrical productions, musical concerts, dance performances and poetry readings.

How to help with this program:
You can donate tickets to a performance, or volunteer to work a workshop, donating a musical instrument and more!

To find out more about the SHARE project visit TASK's website here:
 http://www.trentonsoupkitchen.org/share-project.php

This is a fantastic program for patrons! It's always nice to get the creative juices flowing and a great way to socialize! Way to go TASK and SHARE for this fantastic program!

To get involved contact Jaime Parker at (609) 695-5456 x 105 or jaimep@trentonsoupkitchen.org.

Thank you to the St. Matthias Episcopal Church!!!

Hi All,

Today I just want to dedicate a special thank you to the St. Matthias Episcopal Church for running a sock and coat drive for TASK!

Socks and coats are taken for granted most times, but for the patrons of TASK this is a real gift! So thank you very much!

On November 9th Bev Kniss and Rev. Nancy Hite Speck donated a WHOLE carload of socks and coats! Thank you to all who donated to this drive! It warms my heart to know that these patrons will be warm during this cold winter!

Weekend Volunteering...somewhere else!

Hello there,

Unfortunately, TASK doesn't serve weekend meals (But come on, people need breaks!). And since hunger never rests, there are plenty of other places for you to volunteer on the weekends! So the "I have school or work" excuse has become obsolete! Go out there and volunteer!

TASK's website has a full schedule on where you can volunteer on the weekends! Right now the November schedule is up since it is still November for another week or so. But if you can make it out there during the final weekend of November that would be awesome!

Mission Possible: How You Can Start and Operate a Soup Kitchen

Hiya!

The title of this blog ALSO happens to be the title of a BOOK based on the author's experiences at TASK! The book provides a necessary how-to for any group who wants to start and run their own soup kitchen to help people in need in their area! The book is ordered chronologically starting from "Key start up considerations" all the way too "staffing considerations"

Here is one of the many positive reviews of the book:
"Almost everyone wants to do something to make a difference. Visionary leaders of the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (T.A.S.K) have made a huge difference in the lives of their patrons and in those of us who have been privileged to work with them. Mission Possible is about the best practices that have changed peoples' lives for the better through a soup kitchen. Here's the model. Make a difference!" - E. Roy Riley, Bishop, New Jersey Synod, ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America)

For more information on the novel, look here:
http://www.startasoupkitchen.org/about.htm

You can also download the book straight from the website! So check it out everyone! If it doesn't inspire you to make your own soup kitchen, then maybe it will inspire you to simply get involved with helping ones that are already in place like TASK!

Hightstown Soup Kitchen!

Hi!

Today I want to say congratulations to TASK for opening up it's FIRST satellite soup kitchen outside the city of Trenton! On it's November 3rd opening day, the Hightstown soup kitchen served meals to 45 adults and 17 children. Volunteers greeted the patrons with smiles and music!

Hightstown soup kitchen serves meals every Thursday evening from 4:30 to 6:30 PM at First Methodist Church of Hightstown located at 187 Stocktown Street.

Remember volunteering? Well if you would like to volunteer at the Hightstown soup kitchen contact Gail Zelenak at Gzelenak@rise-community-services.org.

Best of luck to Hightstown soup kitchen and congrats to TASK again for their first satellite kitchen!

Now both TASK and Hightstown can fight the hunger together especially with your help!

TASK's AE Program!

 Hello there!

The Adult Education Program at TASK provides a one - on - one tutoring service for their adult patrons. These adults are tutored in basic literacy skills, math skills, GED Preparation and computer skills. At the beginning of their tutoring experience, patrons meet with the program coordinator and set up personal goals, and a time line in which they would like to meet these goals.TASK also provides all the essential tutoring items, such as notebooks, pens and reading glasses!

All the tutoring takes place within TASK's main building, during hours that do not conflict with their meal times (though, TASK is flexible to meet the needs of their patrons!) A full schedule is available online on their website!

How you can get involved!:
Remember the posts on donations and volunteering? Well TASK doesn't only need food and dinner servers, they need TUTORS and SUPPLIES as well!
For Tutors: you don't need to be a certified teacher! Most of what the patrons need is just someone friendly and helpful to help them succeed in their goals. If you commit to being a tutor however it is preferred that you commit to ONE session every TWO WEEKS.
For Donations: Notebooks, pencils, pens, calculators, and other items are ALWAYS needed. These items can be picked up at any dollar store!

The support the AE Program provides for these patrons is staggering. When a patron passes their GED, a congratualtions post and a picture is posted on the Facebook page!

Any tutors out there or patrons out there who would like to share their experiences with the AE Program please comment below!

Volunteer!

Hi friends!

Today I want to post about volunteer work at the soup kitchen! Many of those who are reading these blogs have probably volunteered at some point, BUT for those who haven't: what are you waiting for?! TASK needs volunteers for a variety of reasons! Whether it be serving food, tutoring adults, or helping out with "Kids day off" OR you could donate and volunteer in that way!

For more information on VOLUNTEERING, visit TASK's website to get the full on details about how you too can help out the soup kitchen!

For those who have volunteered, please comment below and talk of your experiences! Get other people PUMPED about becoming a volunteer!

I will begin: I went to TASK twice during the month of October. Once I served bread and fruits and another day I passed out salt and pepper to the patrons during a mid-day meal on Friday. I enjoyed every second of it. Many times people would smile and bid me good morning, and I couldn't help but smile back. It felt so good to help out, and left my tummy tingling with happiness at the end of the mid-day period. It is always nice to give back to the community every once in awhile.

So Volunteer! Make a difference!

The Simple How to Donate Post!

Well hello there!

Today I would like to speak about donating to the soup kitchen. It's quite simple really, just mosey on over to the website, and click the donations tab on the top tab! It's in big white letters, so really you can't miss it.

There are several ways to donate funds! One way is to simply do it online right this second (Seriously, RIGHT NOW!) Or you can even mail your contribution in (Checks please!) you can find the address on the website as well. ORRRRRR you could donate MONTHLY to TASK without even lifting a finger simply by joining the TASK Force Against Hunger which allows  your donations to be automatically charged to a credit card once a month! There are OTHER ways you can donate too! So visit the website!!!

Not only are funds needed to help the Soup Kitchen BUT food is also a necessary item for the soup kitchen. You can donate food to TASK by either individually setting up a food drive OR if you run a store or are afiliated with a store that deals with food, you can help by donating extra goods to TASK as well (See their wishlist on where else? Their WEBSITE!).

Though food is an obvious donation, TASK is in desperate need of HYGIENE BAGS! They are really simple to make too. Simply gather up the little items like razors, toothpaste, etc, and place them in a bag to donate to TASK. These are in really high demand, so if you're not jumping up at the idea of donating either money or food, PLEASE donate hygiene bags!

There are other things you can donate to TASK as well, and to find them out, check out the website:
http://www.trentonsoupkitchen.org/other-donations.php for more details!

Your donations can help us Fight the Hunger!
So please, consider donating!

And if you have donated before comment below and give an account of your experiences (what did you donate? how much did you donate? what was the donation process like? etc.)

About TASK!

Hiya guys!

This post is mostly directed toward those who don't know TASK very well.

THE HISTORY: TASK began in January of 1982 and began in the basement of a Trenton church. The amount of hungry people was staggering, and as the clientele grew, the basement was no longer big enough. However in 1986, TASK moved into a temporary space provided by the Salvation Army. In 1987 a fund raising mission began, and from that mission came TASK current and permanent facility.

THE MISSION: TASK exists to feed the hungry in the Trenton Area, but more then that, TASK provides services to help better the life of those who come to it's doors.

PROGRAMS: On top of serving food, TASK also offers a adult tutoring program, where adults can come and be tutored in literacy, math, GED Prep and computer skills. Along with tutoring, TASK provides services that promote self-sufficiency: there is a full-time social worker, medical  services, legal services and MORE provided to the patrons. Finally, TASK also provides fun programs during holiday times, like a Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner, and even an Spring Egg Hunt for the kiddies!

Above are just a few great things about TASK
